However, when a student does require a brief break, we’ve created “sensory coves” in the hallways—calm, supportive spaces designed to help students regulate, reset, and prepare to successfully return to the classroom. These coves feature noise-reducing foam to create a quieter, more contained environment, as well as portable desks so students can continue their work in a less stimulating setting while maintaining engagement.

Recognizing that many children with autism might face challenges in this area, Polaris Academy emphasizes building these skills. We use group activities, and role-playing scenarios to help our students understand social cues, develop empathy, and build lasting relationships with their peers.
